George Floyd’s Family Files Civil Lawsuit Against Minneapolis

George Floyd’s family has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city of Minneapolis, calling the killings by police a “public health crisis”. This comes as new police body camera footage was disclosed to several media outlets yesterday revealing Floyd’s last moments and final words which were “I can’t breathe”. The footage reveals a struggle quickly ensued between Floyd and the officers which escalated into his arrest. While Floyd was already physically restrained by former Officer Derek Chauvin for almost 8 minutes, Chauvin then appears to increase the pressure on Floyd’s neck. It also shows Floyd was loaded into the ambulance while unconscious. While numerous demands have been made to have the full footage released to the public, the MPD declined to do so, citing it’s part of an active investigation. Attorney Ben Crump said of the pending lawsuit, “The city of Minneapolis has a history of policies, procedures and deliberate indifference that violates the rights of arrestees, particularly black men, and highlights the need for officer training and discipline.”
