21 Injured After San Diego Naval Ship Catches Fire, Explodes

21 people were injured after a suspicious explosion and fire at the San Diego Naval Base. The incident occurred on the USS Bonhomme Richard which is an amphibious assault ship. The three-alarm fire was reported shortly after 9 a.m. yesterday and continues to rage as we speak. The San Diego fire chief reported it “could burn for days.” It’s unclear at this time what started the fire, although it’s believed to have originated “in the lower vehicle storage area” which is a large open area where marine equipment is stored. It’s been reported of those injured, 17 were sailors and four were civilians. They are all currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. Fortunately, the 160 crew members aboard at the time have been safely evacuated. While the extent of the damage done to the ship is still unknown, it’s strongly believed she will sail again.
