Outrage in Atlanta Over Police-Involved Shooting of Rayshard Brooks
Outrage in Atlanta erupted this weekend over the death of yet another black man at the hands of the police. Atlanta officers responded to the scene of a Wendy’s after receiving reports of a man sleeping in his vehicle in the middle of the drive-through Friday evening. Initially, their encounter with 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks was calm but he did appear to be confused and disoriented. After reportedly failing a breathalyzer test, officers tried to arrest Brooks which is when a struggle began. Brooks appeared to grab an officer’s taser and run away. As he turns back aiming the taser at the officers, he was shot multiple times. The shooting sparked even more protests in Atlanta and the Wendy’s where the incident occurred was burned down. A medical examiner confirmed yesterday that Brooks died as a result of two gun shot wounds to his back and ruled his death a homicide. The officer who shot Brooks was fired and now faces felony murder charges. The Fulton County District Attorney said Brooks was unarmed and his death was unreasonable.
