FDA to Approve Emergency-Use for Potential COVID-19 Treatment

The FDA is set to approve emergency-use authorization for a promising drug called remdesivir. Early research suggests patients who took the drug recovered quicker from COVID-19 than those who didn’t. The normal recovery time for patients right now is 15 days and this drug has proven to cut that down to eleven. Preliminary reports have also suggested a reduction in the mortality rate by almost 3%. Health experts realize these minor improvements don’t seem like much and are a far cry from a vaccine or cure. But, what the results have shown is the virus can be blocked by a preexisting drug. This in turn can potentially lead to better solutions in the future. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it plans to approve the treatment as early as today.
