From Rescue to Recovery

Search and rescue operations come to an end in mudslide-ravaged southern California.

Nearly one week after heavy rains triggered powerful mud and rockslides, officials are calling off the hunt for any still-missing persons. At least 20 people are confirmed dead and the shift to recovery mode is just the next sobering step in what’s expected to be a lengthy recovery. The area was already struggling to bounce back from December’s wildfires. Hundreds of homes were destroyed or severely damaged. Crews are also working to clear the debris from highway 101, a major artery used by some 80,000 vehicles each day. Several miles are closed. Thick, heavy mud has also clogged drainage basins. Days after the storm, new evacuations are ordered in communities where the gas and power are being turned off, to help crews clear debris.
