Discontinuing DACA
President Trump is expected to formally announce a decision to end DACA today.
The expected announcement from the Trump administration today is to bring an end to DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children. The program was introduced by President Obama back in 2012 and was not intended to be a permanent solution, instead a measure intended to provide temporary relief and hope to the approximately 800,000 Dreamers. Back in June, several states threatened a lawsuit if the Trump administration didn’t phase out the program by September 5th. Now the President is expected to follow through on his campaign promise, but with a compromise- Congress will have six months to determine the fate of DACA recipients.
