Powers, Virginia Wolf

Virginia Wolf Powers, 88, of Seven Lakes, NC; passed Wednesday June 29, 2011 at Penick Village in Southern Pines. Mrs. Powers was born January 4, 1923 in Pittsburg, PA; to the late Walter Gustave Leo Wolf and Florentine Sophia Schell Wolf. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel in the Pines in Seven Lakes at a later date. Committal will be in the Seven Lakes Cemetery. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Powers was secretary and treasurer of the S. Howe Company, a small manufacturer in Silver Creek, NY. Business related activities included being a charter member of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Women‘s Business Association. In Buffalo she held many different offices in the same organization. She later held the role as the first president of the Orchard Park, NY, chapter of Zonta International, an organization of women executives in business and professions working together to advance the status of women. As an active volunteer, Mrs. Powers worked during WWII with the Salvation Army in Pittsburg, PA; she later continued her involvement with the Salvation Army in Syracuse, NY. She served as a member and moderator of the session at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. She was a member of PEO in Syracuse, NY; and the Pinehurst chapter BE, where she held various offices including president. Mrs. Powers was also a member of the board for the Seven Lakes Townhouse Association for the past several years also served as secretary. She was an active bridge player and accomplished pianist. Mrs. Powers was preceded in death by her husband David R. Powers from whom she lovingly inherited four children: James Powers and wife Lilly, Joanne Urban and husband John, Richard Powers and wife Betsy and Wendy Powers and husband John. She had a close relationship with a niece and nephew, Debbera Drake-Rogers and husband Robert and Kenneth Drake and wife Shelley. She had 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in memory of Virginia Powers to the Chapel in the Pines at 921 Seven Lakes North, West End, NC 27376 Boles Funeral Home of Seven Lakes is serving the family.
