Lyl F. Culbertson passed away Wednesday evening June 1st at Medford Senior Care Center in Darlington, SC. She was the loving and beloved wife of H. Grady Culbertson, Jr. for 69 years. She and Mr. Culbertson were residents of Rock Hill until 2009 when they moved to Darlington. Mrs. Culbertson is survived by Mr. Culbertson, her two sons H. Grady Culbertson III (Julie) of Darlington and Robert A. “Tab” Culbertson of Rock Hill. She is also survived by two sisters Bessie F. Wood, Pineville, NC and Ruby N. Munn of Rock Hill and by three granddaughters, Julia Amanda (Adam) Hayes, Alexandria, VA, Katherine Eve (Robert) Miranda, Fairfax, VA, and Jennifer Culbertson (Bryan) Latham also of Fairfax. She was great-grandmother to Julia Emory and John Briggs Hayes, and Katherine Elizabeth, Robert Henry “Hank” and James Grady Miranda all of Northern Virginia. Mrs. Culbertson was born Lillie Mae Fortner in March, 1921 to Frank F. and Etta Bailey Fortner. After the early deaths of both Mr. and Mrs. Fortner, Lyl and her sisters and brother moved to Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, SC where she lived until she graduated from high school in July 1940. After high school, she attended nursing training at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg where she met and married Mr. Culbertson. She devoted her life to her church, her family, and her friends. She especially loved gardening and her flowers. Mr. and Mrs. Culbertson lived in Spartanburg, Hartsville, Rock Hill and Darlington, South Carolina. Mrs. Culbertson was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church in Rock Hill for more than 40 years.. Funeral services will be held there on Saturday June 4th at 2:00PM.
