Martinez, Xavier

Xavier(Harvey) Navarrette Martinez, age 69, of Pinehurst, NC, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on May 30, 2011 after an extended and courageous battle with brain cancer. He leaves behind his wife of 10 years, Bernice (Bonnye) Sadler Martinez. They were married on February 14, 2001 in Carson City, Nevada, and after retirement moved to North Carolina in 2003. He is also survived by his children Harv (wife Denise) of Swift Current, Canada, son Brent(wife Lynne) of Modesto, CA, and daughter, Melanie (husband Rod) of Modesto, CA; stepchildren David Henderson (wife Liz) of Vermillion, Ohio, stepdaughter, Toy Henderson (companion Tom) of Pinehurst, NC and Penny Jo Davis (husband Thom) of New London, Ohio; grandchildren Jackie, Ryan, Derek, Ryan Payne, Brandon, Heather, James, Alyssa, Marie, Carey, Chad, Luke, Stephanie, Casey, And Katy; great-grandchildren Neasha, Theo, Haley, and Alexis. In addition he is survived by cousin, Gilberto “Sonny” Limon of Montery Park, CA. Born as the first child to Augustine and Candida Martinez on October 25, 1941 in Pomona, California, Harvey lived all of his younger years in southern California where he made many lifelong friends and fond memories. He was predeceased by his only sibling, a younger brother, Ezequiel. Harvey completed his schooling in the southern California area and attended Bonita High School (a proud Bearcat, He was!), Mt. San Antonio College, and the University of LaVerne where he earned a BA and M.Ed. From there he went on to a long and well-respected career as a teacher, administrator, and mentor within the Department of Corrections and California Youth Authority systems, respectively. As a true sports enthusiast, Harvey was an avid Baseball Purist and “True Blue” Dodger Fan! He enjoyed staying physically fit, fishing, golfing, skiing, working in the yard, traveling, and spending time with his friends and family. He was most noted for his wonderful sense of humor and his committed work ethic to whatever the cause. He will be missed dearly by all his friends and family. No memorial service will be held; however, a portion of his cremated remains will be spread over a previously arranged location; Go Dodgers!
