Henry D. “H.D.” Byrd, age 77, died Friday, May 20, 2011. Born May 1, 1934 in Darlington County, he was the son of the late Walter Harvey Simpson, Sr. and Mary Charlotte Byrd Simpson but was adopted and raised by his grandparents, Alixis and Louise Gainey Byrd. H.D. served his country in the South Carolina Army National Guard for forty two years. He retired after 45 years of working at A&P Grocery and went back to work in 1998 at the recycling station on McIver Road. He was a member of the NCO club, and an avid NASCAR Fan, and enjoyed working in his yard. H.D. was a member of First Original Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Truluck Byrd, a granddaughter, Taylor Brittany Buck of the home, a sister, Louise Swaringen, Albermarle, NC and a special friend Yvonne Alexander of Darlington. He was preceded in death by his only child, Trina Marie Byrd Buck, brothers, Walter H. Simpson, Jr., Robert “Bob” Byrd, Rev. James Byrd, Carl Byrd, D. Clarence Byrd, Laurin Byrd, Dr. Lawson Byrd and a sister, Elizabeth Dixon. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Saturday, May 21 at Belk Funeral Home and other times at 321 Spring St., Darlington Memorials may be madeto McLeod Hospice House, PO Box 100551, Florence, SC 29502-0551. Funeral services will be 3:00 Sunday, May 22 in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment in Darlington Memory Gardens.
