Atkinson, Melvin

Funeral services for Melvin Joseph Atkinson, 66, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. David Deming, the Rev. Todd Horton, and Bryan Leonard will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 5, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Atkinson died Monday, April4, 2011. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Malcolm and Dorothy Fields Atkinson. He was a member of Springvale Baptist Church in Lugoff, SC and previously served as a deacon, brotherhood chairman and door greeter. He served in the U. S. Navy in Viet Nam and was retired from Progress Energy with 33 years of service. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Patricia McLaughlin Atkinson of Ridgeway, SC; son, Yancy Atkinson of Lexington, SC; sister, Margaret Griggs of Hartsville, SC; brothers, Malcolm Atkinson of Norwood, NC, Russell Atkinson of Darlington, SC, Jerry Atkinson of Marshville, NC, Robert Atkinson of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Justin Atkinson, Mary Beth Atkinson; great-grandchild, Lorili Glover. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Atkinson.
