Scientists Turned Plastic into Cookies
They were challenged to make food from what would be found on board a Mars-bound ship.
You can’t get this in a store…a team of researchers from the University of Southern Illinois Carbondale worked with NASA to create at a batch of edible cookies that scientists say were made from recycled plastics.
They were challenged to make food from what would be found on board a Mars-bound ship. The team worked out a method to break down the kind found in bottles in to simple molecules and then fed it to bio-engineered baker’s yeast. Now a form of edible protein, it was mixed with vanilla and 3-D printed into cookies which the team admits they have not yet tried but say they continue to test to confirm its safe to eat.
They say upcycled microbites like these could be invaluable in the future…saying waste is not waste anymore and all resources should be considered.
