Around 2:45am Tuesday, police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2004 Jaguar for speeding and driving recklessly while traveling down Highway 17 in Surfside Beach.
The driver failed to stop, prompting a police chase that continued through the Garden City area and ended near the Highway 17 Bypass overpass. In that area, the Jaguar veered off the road and flipped several times before landing on an embankment.
47-year-old Jerry Lynch Jr. of Charlotte was identified as the driver who did not survive the crash. There were four other occupants inside including a 19-year-old woman and children ages 8, 9, and 10. They were each taken to a hospital with injuries. Alcohol or drugs are expected to be a factor but testing is pending.
