The fall colors will soon start making their way across the country, but timing is everything if you want to catch them at their best.

Fall foliage typically starts showing up in northern states and higher elevations in late September, then gradually works its way south through October and into early November. New England favorites like Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are among the first to peak, while the Great Lakes, midwest and mid-atlantic generally follow throughout October. The southern Appalachians, including North Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountains have one of the longest viewing seasons, with color sometimes hanging around into early November.
