U.S. Marine Veteran Robert Gilman Released From Russian Prison

President Trump took to Truth Social to say that Russia did not ask for anyone in return and that Gilman's release came on a humanitarian basis.

United States Marine veteran Robert Gilman was released from Russian custody Tuesday.

The U.S. citizen spent 1,666 days in a Russian prison after he was arrested on Jan. 17, 2022 in Voronezh and sentenced to 10 years in prison. While in custody, he was subject to harsh and abusive treatment, putting him into “a catatonic state.”

Gilman was arrested after becoming violently ill and was approached by Russian police that claimed he was drunk and assaulted them. They proceeded to assault, arrest, and charge him.

The U.S. State Department referred to Gilman as a wrongful detainee and said his release was part of an exchange with Russia. President Trump took to Truth Social to say that Russia did not ask for anyone in return and that Gilman’s release came on a humanitarian basis.
