Longtime Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71.
Graham has represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2003. He previously served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Graham was a longtime member of the Senate Judiciary and Armed Services Committees. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve, retiring as a colonel after a 33-year career.
The Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia released preliminary findings regarding his death. That found that Graham suffered an aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The life-threatening tear in the inner wall of his aorta caused a sudden cardiac event at his Capitol Hill home.
The death certificate will remain pending until further tests are finalized. Graham’s death on Saturday came just two days after his 71st birthday.
Separately, Sen. Mitch McConnell has broken silence on his hospitalization. He attributed his childhood fight with polio to a fall he suffered last month which landed him the hospital. He was “briefly unconscious” and while recovering he was hit with a mild case of pneumonia. The 84-year-old is still recovering. It is unclear when he will return to the Senate.
