Trump Announces Plans To Roll Back Sanctions On Syria

Trump said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan  had encouraged him to remove the sanctions.

Trump said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan  had encouraged him to remove the sanctions.

They had been imposed against the former Bashar Assad regime amid a civil war. Late last year, the Assad government was driven out of office by Syrian rebels.

“The sanctions were brutal and crippling and served as an important function … but now it’s Syria’s time to shine,” Trump said. He added that ordering the cessation of sanctions gives Syria a chance at greatness.
