Do You Code-Switch at Work?
If you’ve ever felt like you couldn’t be yourself at work, you’re not alone, and there’s a name for it.
Code-switching is when someone changes how they talk or act to fit in with different social situations, especially at work. Whether intentional or not, people code-switch to appear more professional, project confidence, fit in, or mask emotions. According to a new study, the practice is most common among women, with 82% adjusting their speaking style while on the clock. This includes using less humor, reducing filler words like “um” and “like,” and laughing less freely.
