The Senate has officially passed the Laken Riley Act.

The legislation mandates the federal detention of immigrants without legal status who are accused of theft and burglary, among other things.

It will ensure illegal aliens who steal or assault a law enforcement officer are detained by immigration and customs enforcement.

The bill is named after a college student who was killed nearly a year ago by a Venezuelan migrant. Jose Ibarra had previously been arrested in the U.S. for shoplifting.

Senators voted 64-35 on the bill. It is now one step closer to being signed into law by President Trump.
