Luigi Mangione Makes First Appearance In N.Y. Federal Court

Luigi Mangione appeared in federal court in New York City for the first time Thursday.
The 26-year-old is accused of shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He faces four new federal charges, including murder, which could make him eligible for the death penalty. He is also facing multiple state charges.
Mangione nodded as his rights were read to him, he said yes when asked if he understood those rights. He also replied yes when asked if he understood what he’s accused of.
The court appearance came after he was extradited from Pennsylvania where he also faces several charges.
Mangione was ordered to be held ahead of his preliminary hearing, which is now set for January 18. He is currently in a Brooklyn federal prison, the same facility housing Sean “Diddy” Combs.
It is unclear when he will appear in Manhattan criminal court.
