HCS Announces New Policy That Bans Cell Phones In Classrooms
More devices could be included in the ban that will take effect in the second semester of the 2025 school year.
The Horry County School board announced a new cell phone policy that will be enforced next year.
The board approved a draft policy that bans cell phones in the classroom.
It will apply to students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Students who violate the ban on devices while at school could face consequences including suspension.
The ban is specific to school campuses. Exceptions will be made for field trips and athletic events.
Students could also access their devices for medically or educationally necessary purposes.
In an emergency, the school’s principal or administration has permission to lift the ban.
The move comes after a provision in the state’s budget in which the S.C. Department of Education released data in a “Free to Focus” initiative.
More devices could be included in the ban that will take effect in the second semester of the 2025 school year.
