Spirit Airlines Files For Bankruptcy

Passengers with existing Spirit reservations should watch for notifications about potential changes to their itineraries.

One major U.S. airline has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Spirit Airlines has struggled with quarterly losses, failed merger attempts and looming debt maturities.

Further troubles came after the collapse of its $3.8 billion planned merger with JetBlue Airways in January and the impact of an obstacle regarding an engine manufacturer that grounded many of its aircrafts.

The airline listed its estimated assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion each.

Most flights should continue as scheduled for now. However, passengers with existing Spirit reservations should watch for notifications about potential changes to their itineraries.
