Surfside Beach Turns Down Idea To Transfer First Responders To Horry Co.

Horry County offered four personnel to a shift when Surfside only had two. Surfside can currently offer the same.

Surfside Beach does not plan to transfer fire protection services to Horry County.

Debates have been ongoing for months now after the idea to combine the two departments into one came about as a matter of safety.

However, Surfside Beach Fire Chief David Nelson said the agency was understaffed and unable to protect the community then. Now, he says the department has made changes with the help of additional funding.

Nelson added Horry County offered four personnel to a shift when they only had two. Surfside can currently offer the same.

Therefor, Nelson says a transfer is not needed and added it’s important to him they kept the department to maintain a presence in their community.
