Major theater chains in the U.S. and Canada are getting makeovers through a $2.2 billion plan.

The National Association of Theatre Owners represents North America’s movie chains including AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark.

The industry group announced a multibillion-dollar renovation plan that includes the addition of 21,000 screens, which is nearly 70% of the North American box office.

The renovations will “modernize and improve” theaters of all sizes. It involves new projection technology, better sound systems and seating, plus improving concessions and even adding arcades or bowling.

Better air conditioning, new signs and revamped carpeting are also included in the plan.

The changes will take place over the next three years.
