California Governor Signs Law Banning Plastic Bags In Grocery Stores

Shoppers will only be asked if they want a paper bag when the legislation takes effect starting in 2026.

California Gov. Gavin Newsome signed a bill that will change the way grocery stores in the state operate.

The new bill will prevent grocery stores from providing plastic bag options to customers. Shoppers will only be asked if they want a paper bag when the legislation takes effect starting in 2026.

The law comes 10 years after the state banned plastic grocery bags and required stores to only distribute reusable or recyclable plastic bags.

The new measure is described as a “straightforward” approach to reducing pollution.
