(Died November 6, 2010) Vernon “Bud” Driggers SCRANTON: Mr. Vernon Julian “Bud” Driggers, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 6th, 2010 in McLeod Hospice House after a brief illness. Mr. Driggers was born in Pamplico on January 5th, 1923. He was a son of the late Henry B. Driggers and the late Ellen Alma Miles Driggers, and was married to Polly S. Driggers of Scranton. Mr. Driggers was a life-long member of Scranton United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Driggers fought with the 158th Engineer Combat Battalion during battles in Normandy, France, and the Rhineland in the European Theatre. He was owner and operator of Driggers‘ Service Station (“Bud” to My Friends) – celebrating his fiftieth year in business this year. Mr. Driggers was quite an inventive and creative individual. He loved to think on how to improve things, and he holds a patent with the U.S. Patent Office for one of his inventions. Mr. Driggers enjoyed be outdoors – often gardening, bee-keeping, and most of all, fishing. He was a loving husband, step-father, grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. Mr. Driggers‘ surviving family includes his wife of twenty-seven years, Polly S. Driggers, of the home; his five step-children, Henry Sparrow (Linda) of Spartanburg, Betsy Alexander (Rev. Dr. Mike), of Murrells Inlet, Steve Sparrow (Dianne), of Lexington, Walter Sparrow, of Garden City, and Leesa Infinger (Willie), of Scranton; his six step-grandchildren, Susie, Katie, Chad, Abby, Paige, and Bane; and his two step-great-grandchildren, Charles and Kaelyn. Mr. Driggers is preceded in death by his first wife, Lottie Bell Floyd; his five brothers, Hagood, Guy, Virgil, Talmadge, and Ernest Driggers; and his five sisters, Alma Ashman, Carrie Feagin, Grace Bazen, Virginia Bazen, and Hazel Wilkes. The family of Mr. Driggers will have visitation from six until eight o‘clock p.m., tonight, Monday, November 8th, 2010 in the funeral home. Funeral services for Mr. Driggers will be held at eleven o‘clock a.m., Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 in the Scranton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
