Donald Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt over the weekend.
The former president was speaking at a Pennsylvania campaign rally on Saturday when a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear. Two rally attendees were also wounded and one was killed in the gunfire. The deceased victim was identified as a former fire chief from the area. The governor said he “died a hero” protecting his family.
The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks. He opened fire from a rooftop in the vicinity of the rally site before he was shot and killed by a secret service sniper. He was armed with a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle. The firearm is believed to be legally purchased and belonged to his father.
It was announced Monday morning that Crooks had purchased 50 rounds of ammunition just hours before the assassination attempt. Explosive devices were also reportedly found in his car near the rally and at his home.
State voter records show that Crooks was a registered Republican but also reportedly donated to a liberal campaign group in 2021. A clear motive behind the assassination attempt has not been discovered at this time but a thorough investigation is underway. The incident is believed to be a solo mission as Crooks has not been linked to any organizations or terrorist group.
