Gladys Wise Powell

EFFINGHAM. Mrs. Gladys Wise Powell, 97, widow of Richard Cleveland Powell, died Friday, October 22, 2010 at Carolinas Hospital in Florence after an extended illness. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday, October 24, 2010, at St. John Free Will Baptist Church, Pamplico, SC, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Saturday at Carolina Funeral Home, 215 E. Highway 378 ByPass, Scranton, SC. Mrs. Powell was born September 26, 1913 in Pamplico, a daughter of the late George Wallie Wise and Abirella Creel Wise. She was a homemaker and member of St. John Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include her children, Legran R. Powell and his wife, Selma of Florence, Marshall G. Powell and his wife, Cheryl of Effingham, Clara A. McElveen and her husband, Paul of Lake City, and Marilyn P. Anderson of Florence; two sisters, Annie Powell and Mattie Stone both of Pamplico; brother, Earl Wise and his wife, Mary of Johnsonville; grandchildren, Terry Powell, Heather Brown, Marsha Powell, Rhonda Keefe, Michael McElveen and Lisa West; great-grandchildren, Andrew Brown, Dane Keefe, Bradley Keefe, Casie McElveen, Kevin McElveen, Ryan McElveen, Ashley Gee, and Timothy Gee; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her step-mother, Vendall Stone Wise; brothers, Theodore Wise, Lester Wise, and Carnice Wise; sisters, Elma Tanner, Lishey Powell, Freda Williams, and Belgia Benton; step-brothers, Charlie Williams, and Walter Williams; step-sister, Maude McKenzie Memorials may be made to: St. John Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.
