A barge crashed into a bridge pillar in Galveston, Texas Wednesday.

The bridge connects Galveston to Pelican Island. It is the only road that allows drivers to travel to and from the small island.

The impact sent pieces of the bridge tumbling on top of the barge. It resulted in the shut down of a stretch of waterway as oil spilled into waters near busy shipping channels and closed the road. Crews worked to clean up the spill.

The accident knocked one man off the vessel and into the water, but he was quickly recovered and no injuries were reported.

Ports along the Texas coast are used for international trade. However, it was said the collision will unlikely result in serious economic disruptions since it occurred in a lesser-used waterway.

This incident comes weeks after a cargo ship slammed into a support column of the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore. That situation caused the structure to completely collapse which closed off a main channel.
