Arizona Lawmakers Vote To Repeal Century Old Abortion Ban
The state's Supreme Court resurrected the century old law that would only allow an abortion to be conducted if the mother's life was at stake.
Arizona lawmakers are working to repeal a near total abortion law from 1864.
Last month, the state’s Supreme Court resurrected the century old law that would only allow an abortion to be conducted if the mother’s life was at stake. The ban was scheduled to take effect in June.
However, three Republicans joined Democrats in the House to repeal the ban in a 32-28 vote.
It was then sent to the Senate which voted 16-14 in favor of repealing the Civil War-era law.
The repeal is now heading to Gov. Katie Hobbs’ desk. She said she looks forward to quickly signing it.
The state’s 15-week ban will stand after the repeal is passed.
