Texas Gov. Abbott Says State Will Not Abide By New Title IX Regulations
In a letter to President Biden, Abbott opposed the new rules claiming the students are "illegal" and the rules are a "result of efforts to impose a leftist belief onto Title IX."
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he will not abide by the Biden administration’s new regulations to Title IX.
The federal civil rights law prohibits sex-based discrimination at government-funded schools.
The new regulations of the law include protections for transgender students.
In a letter to President Biden, Abbott opposed the new rules claiming the students are “illegal” and the rules are a “result of efforts to impose a leftist belief onto Title IX.”
Abbott added the rules exceed Biden’s authority as president and said in his letter he will instruct his state government not to adhere to the new policies, citing concerns that they conflict with Texas state law.
A growing number of Republican-led states have pledged to reject the Title IX rules finalized this month by the Education Department.
