TikTok has vowed to file a court challenge if Congress passes legislation paving the way to a nationwide ban of the app.
A large bill that would provide aid for Ukraine, Israel and U.S. allies in the Indo-Pacific as well as humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza, also has a passage that includes ramping up U.S. security measures.
The measure would give TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance nine months to sell or face a nationwide ban in the U.S.. Many lawmakers fear that the country is using the app to spy and gather data.
The bill has already passed through the House and is now heading to the Senate for a vote. President Biden has already said he will sign if it passes through both chambers.
App owners have publicly argued the bill is an infringement on its users’ First Amendment rights.
TikTok’s American head of public policy warned employers in a memo that there will be legal challenges to the bill.
