Horry County could soon take control over Surfside Beach first responders.

Mayor Robert Krouse said he was informed by Fire Chief David Nelson, that their station does not have enough manpower to safely serve Surfside Beach.

Town leaders are now seeking to solve the issue.

Krouse said one solution to the problem could come from raising the town’s taxes through a millage increase. However, before doing that, they’re considering turning Surfside’s Fire Department over to Horry County. The department would then operate under HCFR.

Krouse pointed out that Horry County has more manpower and funding to keep the station running.

Surfside Beach and Horry County leaders will meet Thursday to discuss the details and implications surrounding the possible transfer.
