Senate Dismisses Articles Of Mayorkas Impeachment Created By The House

The first article charged mayorkas with “willful and systemic refusal to comply” with immigration law. The second charged him with a “breach of trust” for saying the border was secure.

The Senate dismissed all impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Wednesday.

Earlier this week, House Republicans sent two articles of impeachment to the Senate with hopes of forcing a trial.

The first article charged mayorkas with “willful and systemic refusal to comply” with immigration law. The second charged him with a “breach of trust” for saying the border was secure.

The votes were 51-48 and 51-49 along both party lines.

Senators voted to dismiss both articles and end the proceedings, with Democrats arguing the articles were unconstitutional.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the House Republicans’ charges failed to meet “the high standard of high crimes and misdemeanors.” He added the alleged charges could set a dangerous precedent.

The immediate dismissal of the prosecution of Mayorkas is a defeat for House Republicans who made his impeachment a priority.
