White House Announces New Requirements For Federal Agencies Use Of AI
Agencies that fail to apply the safeguards must cease using the AI system unless actions can be justified.
The White House announced new requirements for federal agencies use of artificial intelligence.
The agencies must now show that their AI tools are not harming the public or stop using them.
Each agency must create a set of concrete safeguards that guide everything from facial recognition screenings at airports to AI tools that help control the electric grid or determine mortgages and home insurance.
Agencies that fail to apply the safeguards must cease using the AI system unless actions can be justified.
The new policy also calls for two other “binding requirements.” One in which federal agencies must hire a chief officer to oversee all the AI technologies. The other involves agencies making public inventory of their AI systems each year including an assessment of the risks they could pose.
