U.S. Calls For Immediate Ceasefire In Gaza Through Resolution Sent To U.N.
If passed, Israel and Hamas will still have to work out their own terms of a ceasefire. Those negotiations are already underway.
The U.S. has submitted a draft resolution to the U.N. calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The revised resolution declares that “an immediate and sustained ceasefire” in the Israel and Hamas war is “imperative” to protect civilians and enable humanitarian aid to be delivered to over 2 million starving Palestinians.
In the past, the U.S. vetoed several resolutions calling for a ceasefire arguing Israel has the right to defend itself. However, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said protecting civilians and getting them aid also needs to be a focus.
The U.N. is expected to vote on the new draft Friday. If passed, Israel and Hamas will still have to work out their own terms of a ceasefire. Those negotiations are already underway.
The death toll since the war first started in October has surpassed 31,900.
