Alexei Navalny Dies In Russian Prison

Alexei Navalny was being held in jail for charges related to extremism and fraud, but were widely viewed as retribution of leading anti-Kremlin opposition.

Alexei Navalny, one of Russian President Putin’s most high-profile critics, died in prison Friday.

Navalny was known for leading multiple investigations into the wealth of Russia’s leader and his inner circle. He attempted to run for president in 2018, but was barred from that vote.

Navalny had been imprisoned since 2021. He was being held in jail for charges related to extremism and fraud, but were widely viewed as retribution of leading anti-Kremlin opposition.

The 47-year-old reportedly “felt unwell” after he went on a walk and lost consciousness.

Prison authorities attempted to resuscitate him without success.

No cause of death was detailed.
