New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani demanded that President Trump end all ICE enforcement in the state following an incident.
On Thursday, an ICE agent shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal during a targeted arrest operation in New York City. Belgal is described as an illegal immigrant who had a prior grand larceny conviction and previous arrests involving assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession. The Department of Homeland Security also alleged that he had ties to the Trinitarios gang.
During the operation, Belgal reportedly tried to flee. At least one federal agent fired seven rounds into his vehicle while his five-year-old son was in the back seat. The incident has triggered outrage and protests. Mamdani condemned the shooting and said he urged Trump to have the man released and said New York City wants ICE agents out.
