During the off-season, the 41-year-old signed a one-year contract to return to the Washington Capitals for his 22nd season in the NHL.

Alex Ovechkin announced this will be his final season in the National Hockey League.

During the off-season, the 41-year-old signed a one-year contract to return to the Washington Capitals for his 22nd season in the NHL, all of which he spent in the nation’s capital.

Ahead of their home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ovechkin made the announcement. He explained that he and his family made the decision over the summer. He also thanked everyone while saying they’ll make this year special.

Ovechkin, the all-time goal-scoring leader in NHL history with 929 goals, played in all 82 regular season games for Washington a year ago. It marked the first time he played all since the 2017-18 campaign. He’s won every major NHL individual award. That includes the Hart, Conn Smythe, Art Ross, the Stanley Cup, and more.
