We now have additional details after a suspicious device was found at a beach access in North Myrtle Beach.

On Monday, the Horry County Police Bomb Squad was called to the 12th Avenue North beach access to observe the object that was near the edge of a landscaped area.

Following examination, the bomb squad confirmed that it was a homemade explosive device. They then took possession and disposed of it per protocols.

Investigators believe the device could have caused significant injury but may have required an ignition to function.

The device is believed to have been planted Sunday afternoon, but it’s unclear who placed it there. Authorities are asking anyone who was near the beach access between 3 and 7pm on Sunday to check in.

If you observed anything out of the ordinary or have any photos, videos or other information from the area that could help, you’re asked to contact investigators.

Authorities have swept the area multiple times and no other devices have been located.
