Should a Child’s Allowance be Tied to Chores?

Back in the day, kids could get an allowance for doing all their chores. Now, it’s basically a subscription service…for keeping your child from asking for money.

There’s a new poll out on kids’ spending allowances, and thousands of Americans weighed in. 44% of them said they never got an allowance. 36% got an allowance at some point when they were younger, but they had to earn it and 14% got one, but it wasn’t tied to chores.

When asked, nearly two-thirds of people say kids should get an allowance, and they should earn it. Maybe they believe it’s important to teach kids the value of hard work…that they should contribute to household responsibilities. But, others think it should not be tied to chores. Maybe they feel like the most important lesson is learning about money and budgeting. People were also asked, “What age, if any, do you think children should start receiving an allowance?” The most popular was between 7 and 9.
