The Healthiest Types of Bread…Sourdough isn’t #1

A registered dietitian says some breads can be great sources of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals.

Bread sometimes gets a bad rap, but you don’t necessarily have to ditch it to eat a healthy diet…you may just need to choose your loaf wisely.

A registered dietitian says some breads can be great sources of fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals, particularly when they’re made with whole grains. Sprouted grain bread tops the list because sprouting can increase protein and antioxidants while also making some nutrients to absorb. Whole wheat bread is another strong choice thanks to its fiber, while sourdough’s fermentation process may make it easier for some people to digest. Multi-grain can provide plenty of fiber and protein, but shoppers should check that it’s actually made with whole grains rather than mostly refined flour.

In general, look for bread made with 100% whole grains, around 3 to 6 grams of protein per slice, at least 3 grams of fiber and less than 2 grams of added sugar.
