17-Year-Old Student Shot And Killed At School Bus Stop
The victim was identified as 17-year-old Jomiltron Fair Jr., a student at Gaffney High School. He was fatally shot during an altercation.
On Wednesday morning, a high school student was shot and killed in upstate South Carolina.
The Cherokee County School District and Gaffney Police Department confirmed the shooting unfolded near a school bus stop in the 500 block of W. Rutledge Avenue.
The victim was identified as 17-year-old Jomiltron Fair Jr., a student at Gaffney High School. Officials said he reportedly walked from his apartment across the street to the bus stop shortly before 7am.
Fair was about to board the bus when a male teenage suspect approached him. An altercation took place before the suspect shot fair. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a car with a getaway driver.
On Thursday, 17-year-old Reginald Barnes Jr. was taken into custody in connection to the shooting. He is being charged as an adult for murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. At this time, officials said a second suspect, 18-year-old Keveon Covington, remains on the run and faces the same charges.
Approximately 15 students were already on the bus when the shooting occurred. Investigators are working to learn more. Extra police officers are patrolling Gaffney schools and nearby neighborhoods.
