Georgia Man Dies After Saving Child From Myrtle Beach Rip Currents

47-year-old Derrick Moore of Georgia was able to assist the child and get her to safety, but he collapsed immediately after.

A man has died after helping a child that was struggling in the ocean in the Myrtle Beach area.

Around 8pm on Friday, a young girl was witnessed struggling in strong rip currents near 10th Avenue South. The lifeguards had already gone off duty.

47-year-old Derrick Moore of Georgia was able to assist the child and get her to safety, but he collapsed immediately after. He was then pulled underwater by the rip current.

The Myrtle Beach Police and Fire Departments launched a search to locate Moore. His body was recovered on Saturday near 11th Avenue South. The Myrtle Beach Police Department is investigating the death.
