Fallen Deputy Out Of Darlington Co. Named S.C. Deputy Of The Year

Devin Mason was killed in July 2025 after he and another deputy were ambushed while looking for a wanted man at a home near Lamar.

A fallen deputy with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office has been named the 2026 South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association Deputy of the Year.

Sheriff Michael August nominated Devin Mason for the statewide award, which was voted on by 46 sheriffs who make up the association. Mason’s family accepted the award on his behalf at an annual banquet.

“The recognition reflects Deputy Mason’s exceptional dedication, unwavering professionalism, and selfless commitment to serving the citizens of Darlington County,” the sheriff’s office said.

Mason was killed in July 2025 after he and another deputy were ambushed while looking for a man wanted on conspiracy and forgery charges at a home near Lamar. Another deputy was wounded and has since recovered. The suspect, Cameron Dennett was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.

The sheriff’s office said Mason’s legacy “of courage, honor, and service continues to inspire everyone at the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office and throughout the law enforcement community.”
