North Myrtle Beach Approves First Reading Of Smoking Ban On Beaches
The proposed amendment would prohibit smoking on public beaches including the use of e-cigarettes.
The city of North Myrtle Beach passed the first reading of an ordinance regarding smoking on the beach.
The proposed amendment would prohibit smoking on public beaches including the use of e-cigarettes. A list of the beaches where the ban would be implied would be released if the ordinance is approved officially. It must pass through a second reading.
Part of the ordinance reads, “The city council finds that smoking on public beaches creates avoidable impacts to public health, environmental quality, and the use and enjoyment of shared recreational spaces. Exposure to secondhand smoke affects beachgoers, and cigarette related waste, including filters and vaping materials, is a common source of litter on coastal shorelines. This debris introduces pollutants into the sand and water, poses risks to wildlife, and increases maintenance costs.”
