New Bill Brings Up Sunday Liquor Sales Debate In S.C. Capitol

Currently, alcohol sales on Sundays are only legal at restaurants and bars.

The Sunday liquor sales debate has returned to the South Carolina Capitol.

House Bill 4001 would allow licensed retailers to sell liquor between 1pm and 5pm on Sundays. The bill has moved to the judiciary committee for consideration.

Those who support the bill argue that it’s good for small businesses but critics argue it pressures small shops to open seven days a week, while some want to protect religious beliefs.

It was reported that the decision would not be statewide mandated but a local choice. The bill must pass in both the Senate and the House before heading to Gov. McMaster’s desk.
