The longtime civil rights leader, two-time Democratic presidential candidate, and founder of the Rainbow PUSH coalition died peacefully Tuesday surrounded by his family.
A cause of death was not mentioned, but Jackson had suffered from multiple health problems in recent years, including a Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis.
The Greenville, South Carolina native was involved in civil rights activism as a teenager and became a known figure.
Over decades of activism, he received dozens of honorary degrees. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Though he never took office, he remain an influential political figure.
