House Passes SAVE America Act Regarding Voting
The the 'SAVE America Act' would require photo ID to vote in any federal election.
The House of Representatives passed a controversial overhaul bill Wednesday.
The House passed the ‘SAVE America Act’ that’s aimed at keeping non-citizens from voting in U.S. federal elections. It serves as an updated version of the ‘Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act’ that was passed by the House in 2025, but was never taken up in the Senate.
The new version would create a new federal proof of citizenship mandate in the voter registration process and impose requirements for states to keep their rolls clear of ineligible voters. It would also require photo ID to vote in any federal election.
Democrats have opposed the bill calling it voter suppression, while Republicans argue it’s necessary to root out illegal immigrant votes. The bill passed in the House on a 218-213 vote with only one Democrat in favor.
