Lumberton Bridge To Close For Replacement Project

A detour will be placed with signs sending travelers onto the larger NC-72 bridge three blocks away.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced a bridge replacement project will kick off next week.

West Fifth Street will close over the Lumber River in Robeson County. This is the smaller of the two bridges that cross the water near the city’s center and sees less traffic.

The 70-year-old bridge will close and the replacement will have wider lanes, shoulders and sidewalks, storm drainage system upgrades, and more.

The project is expected to last around three years. A detour will be placed with signs sending travelers onto the larger NC-72 bridge three blocks away.

This project comes after the larger bridge was replaced last year.
